Roadrunner Contemplates a New Home

Each picture should get bigger if you click on it.

a big mouthful

Mmmmmm – an empty hornets’ nest – my favorite! I’ll need a place to store it.

crouched by birdhouse

I’ll sneak up to see if anyone is home.

anyone home?

Knock, knock – is anyone home?

taking measurements

Seems not . . . I’ll just take a few measurements to see if this place suits me.

So,so cute! I can’t believe the length of his tail feathers in the second photo. And you could have won the Roadrunner Photo Contest with any of these photos. They are great. 🙂

Thanks, Barbara. I think the eye color – likely a male – in the other picture is what took the prize. This is probably a female, judging from her much plainer colors. She was sure having a ball out there that afternoon. She gave that hornets’ nest a couple of good shakes before deciding it didn’t have enough nutrition in it to make it worthwhile. It was just an empty nest that had been inside that birdhouse for a long time. The wind blew the top off, but we couldn’t find all of the pieces, so now it is topless! ;->

Thanks. We are really enjoying them. Two new eggs appeared in the old nest yesterday, but no bird is sitting on them, so presume they were produced by the young female from a few months ago, and she doesn’t know what to do yet.
