Perfect Water Fountain

rock squirrel drinking.1

He looked at his watch, then tapped his little foot. The sprinkler is supposed to come on at 5:15, but it was a minute late. All was forgiven very quickly. He got water all over his cute little button nose, but didn’t seem to mind being wet.

This morning his early morning foray onto the deck was interrupted by the roadrunner pair appearing on the scene. There was a momentary standoff, but it was mostly over by the time I got the lens cap off my camera.

Looks like this is, indeed, a Rock Squirrel, as Beverly mentioned. He has taken up residence under our shed, comes onto the deck early in the morning, and hangs out in the carport – stretched full length – where the cement is cool in the afternoons. I noticed that his TO DO list included getting a new lounge chair and umbrella.

He sure is cute! ;->

    After reading your caption about what this little guy is, I found some not-so-nice problems they cause in New Mexico:

    even though they look like a tree squirrel, and can climb trees, they are actually live under ground.

      This one looks more than well fed, so he is eating something somewhere. I’m glad we’re not trying to grow anything here. There are precious few acorns on the ground now as the javelina snurfed them all up months ago. “His” sprinkler is on right now, but he is nowhere in sight. I wonder if yesterday was a one-off, or if he knows when that sprinkler is on. They come at 15-minute intervals all over the front and back yards, so he has plenty of opportunities, and most are less dramatic than in the picture.

      In subsequent pictures (they were blurrier), he had water all over his face. Very cute. He was holding something in those tiny paws this morning, and just exuded cuteness. He stood up on his hind legs, put his front paws on one of the cross beams on the deck and looked like he was surveying his newly-found kingdom. That’s when the roadrunners showed up. I’m sure they thought they had first rights, but they hopped out into the alley and continued down the way. I tried mightily to get them both in the same picture frame, but succeeding in getting just about zip the whole morning.

      I usually have to shoot out a small portion of my kitchen window where there is no screening, and it was REALLY dirty by this morning. DH took pity on me and cleaned everything off, so everything is sparkling now. Hopefully tomorrow there will be another scenario to snap at.

    That photo is so cute, at first I thought, “what he has a walking stick and is walking?” It’s so comical. I think you really enjoy your environment!
