A weird combination of tree denizens. We had to do a double take.

Great picture, and I love the title!

There actually had been several doves in the tree, but by the time I had freed the camera from its case, all but one had flown off. Still it was hard to believe that one of the doves was a squirrel. Of course squirrels are found in trees, so nothing strange there, but it was just funny to see him in that particular tree with the birds.

“I’ve got your six”, said the dove to the squirrel. . .

You got me with that one, Kit. Could pretty much guess, but had to look it up to be sure.
“Basically means “I’ve got your back.” Comes from the old pilot system in which directions correspond to hours on the clock, where 12 o’clock is forward and 6 o’clock is behind. Thus anyone behind you is “at your six.”
Good call! ;->

So cute. I thought it was two birds until I clicked on the photo and enlarged it. Definitely an odd couple!

We were surprised, too. Usually the squirrel is seen just scampering across the yard. Not sure why he was up in that tree. The leaves are just starting to come out on those mesquite trees, so there really isn’t anything to eat up there. Perhaps he was watching for some company to arrive and needed a taller vantage point!
