The Pomegranate

Received this as a hostess gift and let it ripen for several weeks.

Watched a few videos on how best to get out the seeds.  Here are the results of Step 1.

See those white membranes?  Removing those is the hardest part of the process.

The results look like this, and a few on top of cereal this morning were really good.  But what you don’t see are the little flicks of bright red juice all over my clothing, counter, and anything standing within twenty feet of me!

Would I do it again?  Maybe!  ;->

I’ve never tried to cut or eat a pomegranate. But about a year ago Costco carried a frozen organic fruit combo that contained this fruit, and the taste was so good I decided the difference was the pomegranate. I don’t think I’ll try to prepare one myself though.

I saw this done on Kelly and Michael the other morning, they were using the seeds in a recipe and it worked really fast, and no mess!

Here’s another one – basically the same, but cutting the fruit in sections before tapping it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUsfw-KppCU

    Who knew??? 🙂

I was actually ready to throw in the towel (literally!) on ever doing it again, but the few that we sprinkled on our cereal this morning really gave a nice zing to the bowl of cooked cereal. Last week they were $1. at Fry’s and $2.50 at Safeway – but I didn’t buy any at either place because we still had this one untried! I probably will do it again if only to admire the sparkly seeds!

  3. Such a beautiful pomegranate!
There is an easier way to extract the seeds. If interested, check my TIPS page for an explanation.

So lovely, yet so laborious. A valiant effort!

I have 3 pomegranate trees in Greece and brought some fruits home. I know peeling is really hard work, but you can make nice food with it. Either you fill a chicken with the seeds (with raisins and nuts, too) or I put the seeds into joghurt with some maple syrup. It was really yummy. Virtual hugs, Mitza

What method was this? take a hammer, tap it hard and watch out for little flicks of bright red juice all over the clothing? The end result is nice. Have a lovely day!

I cut off the top and the bottom, and then broke it into segments. Then I tried scraping out the seeds with a grapefruit knife and then attacked them with my fingers. I might try the “hammer” method next, though. I plan to buy another one today, so stay tuned! ;->

  7. Well worth the effort, in my opinion. 🍓
