Here they are as newborns (above). There are three tiny babies in there – seems like only yesterday !
And here they are a few days ago (below).
TODAY! The largest one is out of the nest and having boot camp training by the parents. He seems to have been evicted from the nest a few days ago, as he was mostly sitting on a branch about two inches from the nest – close, but not still in the nest. Pretty much, he took up all the space inside the nest, so was evicted.
We watched for quite a while this morning while he tried to get over the fence in the back yard, and out into the alley and open area that seems to be their own private “Bugger King”.
The parents were out in the alley coaxing him to hop up onto the fence and drop down on the other side. It’s not very far up from the berm, but it would appear that his spring mechanism to hop up to the top of the fence has not yet entirely matured into usefulness!
I’ll have a few pictures of the fledging procedure up in a day or so.
SPOILER: He made it!
Several times I have witness the young birds fledge late in the afternoon, and it is a concern whether they will get the hang of it before nightfall.

Well, they got an early start here! There are two more babies to launch, but we think there are about two to three days differential in ages, so there should be plenty of time to get one going before the next one grows out of the nest. They sure grow fast once they get going! The amount of food that has been brought into that nest is amazing!

You’re right. We watch programs on PBS on Thursday and Sunday nights, otherwise it stays off. We spend our spare time on the deck with our roadrunner family and watch the world go by!

We didn’t see #2 fledge, but there is only one left in the nest this morning. While we sat out there on the deck, he was fed a juicy dragonfly and a wiggly lizard! Much fluttering and pathetic baby bird stuff going on. I got some pictures, but mostly in the shade and with the cell phone, so not top quality.

Even I am amazed at how fast they grow. Actually the entire process of nest building, egglaying, hatching and growing up..it is all over within a couple of weeks.Nice pics Dorrie.Well captured.

More pix to come. The nest is in a very awkward place. The camera always focuses on the leaves and sticks in front of the nest!

I will look forward to the pics Judilyn. I know it gets difficult to shoot. Our feathered friends are too clever. Hiding their babies from the world😊
